The Heart Behind the Words
If you are navigating the confusing, tender, and often exhausting world of dementia care, I want you to take a deep breath. You are in the right place.
I’m Sue Dyson, and I spent my career as a Registered Nurse working on dementia Special Care units. Over those years, I sat with countless families, witnessed the quiet weight of ambiguous loss, and saw firsthand how deeply both family caregivers and professional aides struggle to find a way to communicate gently. I created Speaking With Care because I am on a mission to change that.
Learning the Unspoken Language
In the clinical world, it’s easy to focus solely on tasks, schedules, and charts. But in the real world of dementia, those things don’t bring peace. True care happens in the quiet spaces between words. It happens when we learn to step out of our own logic and meet a person exactly where they are today.
Throughout my nursing career, I investigated care environments and worked alongside aides who truly wanted to do well but simply lacked the tools to communicate gently. The resulting frustration on both sides broke my heart. I realized that gentle communication isn’t just an instinct. It is a skill that needs to be taught, nurtured, and supported.
A Deep Urge to Contribute
Life eventually took me away from the bedside, and for years I worked in the regulatory side of healthcare. Yet, even after navigating the intense burnout that so many of us in care professions face, that deep, innate urge to care and contribute never left me. It just needed a new home.
I created Speaking With Care to bring my decades of experience full circle—to bridge the gap between clinical knowledge and the deep emotional support you actually need in the trenches.
When you spend time here, you can expect:
- Bite-Sized Wisdom: Practical, scannable insights designed for full days and tired minds.
- Gentle Communication Tools: Simple shifts in how you speak and connect to replace frustration with peace.
- Emotional Validation: A safe harbor to acknowledge the grief, the love, and the complex landscape of caregiving—without judgment.
You do not have to walk this path alone, and you do not have to lose your own spirit to protect theirs. Let’s learn this gentler language together, one step at a time.
With care, Sue Dyson Founder of Speaking With Care
